When trapping game animals, only traps that cause the animal's immediate death upon triggering may be used. Traps must be maintained and placed in a way that they are functional and effective and do not pose a danger to humans or anything other than the targeted animal.
Traps with a diameter of no more than 20cm may be used for hunting ferrets, weasels, martens, and squirrels, as well as for catching unprotected mammals and mink (an invasive species).
Traps may be used underwater for hunting European and Canadian beavers and for capturing unprotected mammals and harmful invasive species (mink and muskrat). The diameter of traps used for this purpose may be up to 30cm.
Raccoons, foxes, and badgers may not be trapped with instant-kill traps. The passive trapping method used for these animals is live traps, where it can be determined if the animal has entered the trap at least once per day.
