Outdoor Companion Kuksa, Birch Burl Bear
Handcrafted in Muurame, Central Finland from precious birch burl and strong moose antler. The ecological kuksa has such an excellent tactile feel that you won't want to let it go. The kuksa features a handmade image of a bear.
Creating the 'raw' kuksa takes about 2 hours of manual work per kuksa. Additionally, drawing the image on the patterned kuksa takes about another 2 hours.
The kuksa is an ecological alternative. It is made from wood, a renewable material that doesn't require detergent or hot water for cleaning. It does not conduct heat, meaning coffee stays warm longer and doesn’t easily burn your mouth.

Kuksa Care Instructions:
1. Fill the kuksa with hot coffee water, not boiling. Let it sit for two minutes and pour out.
Boiling in saltwater will eliminate tensions in the wood, hence the salty taste in the kuksa. The worst salt in the kuksa dissolves in hot water.
2. Allow the kuksa to dry for a couple of hours, preferably until the next day. The wood grain opens up when it gets wet and then dries.
3. Brew strong filter coffee. Do not drink directly from the kuksa; instead, take a spoonful of warm coffee grounds from the filter and place it in the kuksa. Rub the grounds against the sides of the kuksa with your thumb until they are dry (3-5 min). This will create a water-repellent fat coating inside the kuksa, preventing it from absorbing moisture and cracking as it dries. Likewise, any extra flavors will remain under the fat layer.
Drink from the kuksa, but do not wash it, as its durability and hygiene depend on it not being washed. The kuksa absorbs any remaining moisture after drinking almost instantly, and on the dry, salty wood surface, bacteria cannot thrive. If you eat/drink something thicker from the kuksa, it’s good to rinse it with warm water. If a thick residue forms, scrape it off with a knife.
Initially, use it frequently so that a fat layer develops on the surface of the kuksa. Then it will be ready for long outdoor trips and will start to withstand spirits as well and taste like what you drink, not what was last consumed from it.
(To quickly alter the kuksa's flavor, fill it with about a capful of your preferred spirit: Pour it in and swish it around for a while. The spirit absorbs into the kuksa, and a few cups of coffee will have a slight spirit flavor, but not so much a salty and woody taste. A larger amount of spirit will seep through the wood's grains, potentially causing the kuksa to crack as it dries out. This step is not essential.)
