Outdoor Companion Kuksa, Birch Hawk
Handcrafted in Central Finland, Muurame, from valuable burl birch and strong moose antler. The ecological kuksa has such an excellent tactile feel that you won't want to let go of it. The kuksa features a hawk design.
Creating a 'raw' kuksa takes approximately 2 hours of handcrafting per kuksa. Additionally, drawing the design on the patterned kuksa takes about another 2 hours.
The kuksa is an ecological alternative. It is made from wood, a renewable material that does not require detergent or hot water for cleaning. It does not conduct heat, meaning coffee stays hot longer and does not burn your mouth as easily.
An excellent gift that every outdoor companion will surely treasure! A daily use item that lasts well when cared for.
Material: Burl birch and moose antler
Volume: approx. 200ml
Weight: approx. 230g
Note that each handcrafted kuksa is naturally unique. If you order from the online store, each shape or grain of the wood will not be 100% the same, but the model is manufactured very closely. So, you will receive a unique gift or a quality product made as Finnish craftsmanship every time.
Kuksa Care Instructions:
1. Fill the kuksa with hot coffee water, not boiling. Let it sit for two minutes and pour it out.
Boiling in saltwater eliminates tensions in the wood, hence the kuksa may have a salty taste. The worst salt will dissolve in hot water.
2. Let the kuksa dry for a few hours, preferably until the next day. The wood grains will open up when it becomes moist and then dried.
3. Brew strong filter coffee. Do not drink directly from the kuksa; instead, take a tablespoon of wet warm coffee grounds from the filter and put them into the kuksa. Rub the grounds against the walls of the kuksa with your thumb until they are dry (3-5 min.). This way, you'll soon get a water-repellent grease layer on the kuksa, preventing it from soaking and cracking as it dries. Any extra flavors will also remain under this grease layer.
Drink from the kuksa, but do not wash it, as its durability and hygiene depend on not washing it. The kuksa immediately absorbs the moisture left after drinking, and in a dry, salty wood surface, bacteria cannot thrive. However, if you eat/drink something thicker from the kuksa, it's good to rinse it with warm water. If a thick film forms, scrape it off with a knife.
Use it frequently at first so that a greasy layer forms on the surface of the kuksa. Then it will be ready for long outdoor trips, and it will start to handle alcohol and retain the taste of what you drink, rather than what was last consumed from it.
(You can quickly change the taste of the kuksa with about a corkful of the alcohol you like: Put a corkful in the kuksa and swish it for a moment. The alcohol will absorb into the kuksa, and a few cups of coffee will taste slightly of alcohol, but not as much salt and wood. A larger amount of alcohol will seep through the wood grains, and if the kuksa gets soaked, it can crack as it dries. This step is not essential.)
