Outdoor Companion Kuksa, Birch Metso
Handmade in Central Finland, Muurame, from precious birch and strong moose antler. The tactile experience of this ecological kuksa is so outstanding that you won't want to let it go. The kuksa is adorned with an image of a capercaillie.
Creating a 'bare' kuksa by hand takes about 2 hours per kuksa. Additionally, drawing the pattern on the decorative kuksa takes around 2 more hours.
The kuksa is an eco-friendly option. It is made from wood, a renewable material that requires no detergents or hot water for cleaning. It does not conduct heat, meaning your coffee stays warmer for longer and is less likely to burn your mouth.
An excellent gift that every outdoor companion will surely cherish! A daily use item that lasts well if cared for.
Material: Birch and moose antler
Volume: approx. 200ml
Weight: approx. 230g
Note that each handcrafted kuksa is naturally unique. If you order from the online store, the shape or grain of the wood won't be 100% identical every time, but the manufacturing is very closely matched. Therefore, you'll receive a unique gift or a high-quality Finnish handcrafted product each time.
Kuksa Care Instructions:
1. Fill the kuksa with coffee-hot water, not boiling. Let it sit for two minutes and then pour it out.
Boiling it in saltwater eliminates the tensions in the wood, which is why the kuksa has a salty taste. The worst salt will dissolve in hot water.
2. Let the kuksa dry for a couple of hours, preferably until the next day. The wood grain opens up when it gets moist and dries.
3. Brew strong filter coffee. Do not drink directly from the kuksa; instead, take a tablespoon of wet warm coffee grounds from the filter and place it in the kuksa. Rub the grounds against the walls of the kuksa with your thumb until they are dry (3-5 min). This will create a water-repellent greasy film inside the kuksa, preventing it from soaking up moisture and cracking as it dries. Additionally, any excess flavors will remain beneath the greasy film.
Drink from the kuksa, but do not wash it, as its durability and hygiene rely on not washing the kuksa. The kuksa absorbs the moisture left inside after drinking, and the dry salty wood surface prevents germs from thriving. If you consume something thicker from the kuksa, it is advisable to rinse it with warm water. If a thicker film develops, scrape it off with a knife.
Initially, use it frequently so that a greasy patina forms on the surface. Then it will be ready for long outdoor trips and will even tolerate alcohol, imparting the taste of what you're drinking rather than what was last consumed from it.
(Quickly change the kuksa's flavor with about a capful of your preferred spirit: Pour a capful into the kuksa and swirl it around for a moment. The spirit will soak into the kuksa, and a few cups of coffee will taste slightly of the spirit, but not as much of salt and wood. A larger amount of spirit will seep through the wood's fibers, and if the kuksa gets soaked, it may crack as it dries. This step is not essential.)
