Outdoor Companion Kuksa, Birch, KING BEAR
Handcrafted in Muurame, Central Finland, from valuable birch wood and robust moose antler. The tactile feel of this ecological kuksa is so exceptional that you won't want to let it go.
Adorned with the grip handle representing the Forest King, Bear itself!
It takes approximately 2 hours of craftsmanship to create a 'bare' kuksa. Additionally, drawing the picture on a patterned kuksa requires roughly another 2 hours. The creation of the bear design takes significantly longer, and the final result justifies the time invested. A unique piece!
The kuksa is an ecological alternative. It is made from wood, a renewable material that does not require detergent or hot water for cleaning. It does not conduct heat, meaning your coffee stays warm longer and does not burn your mouth easily.
An excellent gift that every outdoor companion will surely cherish! A daily use item that lasts well when cared for.
Material: Birch and moose antler
Volume: approximately 2dl +
Weight: approximately 230g
The bear design can be made as a custom order. Please note that this will take more time if not readily available, approximately 14 - 35 days depending on material availability.
Please note that each handcrafted kuksa is naturally unique. If you order from the online store, each piece of wood and its grain will not be 100% identical, but the model will be crafted very closely. You will receive a unique gift or a high-quality product made as Finnish craftsmanship every time.
Kuksa Care Instructions:
1. Fill the kuksa with hot coffee water, but not boiling. Let it sit for two minutes, then pour it out.
Boiling in salt water removes tensions from the wood, which is why the kuksa has a salty taste. The worst salt in the kuksa dissolves in hot water.
2. Allow the kuksa to dry for a couple of hours, preferably until the next day. The wood grain expands when it becomes moist and dries.
3. Brew strong filtered coffee. Do not drink directly from the kuksa; instead, take a wet warm spoonful of leftover coffee from the filter’s bottom and place it into the kuksa. Rub it against the walls of the kuksa using your thumb until dry (3-5 minutes). This will create a water-repellent oily layer inside the kuksa, preventing it from soaking in moisture and cracking when drying. Additionally, any leftover flavors will remain beneath this oily layer.
Drink from the kuksa, but do not wash it, as its durability and hygiene depend on not washing it. The kuksa absorbs any moisture left after drinking immediately, and with the dry salty wood surface, bacteria cannot thrive. However, if you consume thicker substances from the kuksa, it is best to rinse it with warm water. If a thick film forms, scrape it off with a knife.
Initially, use it frequently so that an oily surface forms on the kuksa. Then it will be ready for long outdoor trips and will start to withstand alcohol, holding the flavors of what you drink rather than what was previously consumed.
(You can quickly alter the flavor of the kuksa with about a capful of your preferred alcohol: Add a capful into the kuksa and swish it around for a moment. The alcohol will absorb into the kuksa, and a couple of cups of coffee will taste slightly of alcohol but not so much of salt and wood. A larger amount of alcohol can seep through the wood grains, causing the kuksa to soak and potentially crack when drying. This treatment is not necessary.)
