Wilderness Buddy Kuksa, Birch 'Paljas'
Handcrafted in Muurame, Central Finland, from valuable birch and sturdy moose antler. The ecological kuksa has an exceptional tactile feel that you won’t want to let go of. The kuksa features the unique pattern of the birch wood.
Creating the 'Paljas' kuksa takes about 2 hours of manual labor per kuksa. Additionally, drawing the pattern takes approximately 2 hours more.
The kuksa is an eco-friendly alternative. It is made from wood, a renewable material that does not require detergent or hot water to clean. It does not conduct heat, meaning your coffee stays hot longer without burning your mouth.
An excellent gift that every wilderness enthusiast will surely appreciate! A daily use item that lasts well when taken care of.
Material: Birch and moose antler
Capacity: approx. 2dl +
Weight: approx. 230g
Please note that each handcrafted kuksa is naturally unique. If you order from the online store, each wood grain or knot will not be 100% identical, but the design will be very close. You will receive a unique gift or a high-quality product made from Finnish craftsmanship every time.
Kuksa Care Instructions:
1. Fill the kuksa with hot coffee water, not boiling. Let it sit for two minutes and pour it out.
Boiling in salted water eliminates the tensions in the wood, which is why the kuksa has a salty taste. The worst salt will dissolve in hot water.
2. Allow the kuksa to dry for a couple of hours, preferably until the next day. The wood grains open up when they get wet and then dry.
3. Brew strong filter coffee. Do not drink directly from the kuksa; instead, take a tablespoon of wet grounds from the bottom of the filter and place it into the kuksa. Rub the grounds against the walls of the kuksa with your thumb until they are dry (3-5 min.). This will create a water-repellent grease layer in the kuksa, preventing it from soaking and cracking as it dries. All excess flavors will also remain under the grease layer.
Drink from the kuksa, but do not wash it, as durability and hygiene rely on not washing the kuksa. The kuksa absorbs any leftover moisture immediately after drinking, and on the dry, salty wood surface, germs cannot grow. If you consume something thicker from the kuksa, it’s best to rinse it with warm water. If a thick layer forms, scrape it off with a knife.
Initially, use it frequently so that the grease layer builds up on the kuksa's surface. Once established, it is ready for long wilderness trips and will start to withstand alcoholic beverages, allowing the taste of what you drink to prevail rather than the taste of what was last consumed from it.
(Quickly, you can change the flavor of the kuksa with about a capful of the liquor you prefer: Pour a capful into the kuksa and swish it around for a moment. The liquor will absorb into the kuksa, and a few cups of coffee will have a hint of alcohol without overpowering salt and wood flavors. A larger amount of liquor can seep through the wood fibers, causing the kuksa to soak, which may lead to cracking as it dries. This step is not necessary.)
