The Tommi knife is an old knife model from Hyrynsalmi. Forging of the knife began in the Mustalahti house of Oravivaara around the year 1870.The Tommi knife is a product of the Keränen blacksmith family. The first forger of the Tommi knife was blacksmith Kalle Keränen (1844-1912), who was a skilled blacksmith from a young age. When he learned that oil hardening techniques were applied far to the south in Fiskars, which were unknown in Kainuu, the young man packed his supplies and traveled to Fiskars to learn advanced skills in hardening, forging, and casting. The Fiskars factory had just recruited a skilled ironworker from England, Thomas Woodvard, to head its fine crafting shop. He was the master from 1862 to 1875. Under his tutelage, Kalle Keränen gained final insights into the intricacies of knife forging, hardening, and metal casting. The Tommi knife is based on an old Hyrynsalmi knife model, to which Keränen integrated the knowledge and skills acquired in Fiskars, transforming the knife into a work of art.The name Tommi knife derives from Thomas Woodvard. After receiving a little too much whiskey from a workshop client, Keränen could boast, "I am Tommi." He referred to his master "Tommi Woodvard." Gradually, Kalle Keränen began to be called Tommi Keränen and eventually simply Tommi. The blacksmith's name then became the name of the knife.
